DAVY CROCKETT NOT DEAD
The above article (reprinted from the Cincinnati Whig in the Newark Daily Advertiser, May 2, 1836) was not the only one to appear in the months following the Fall of the Alamo stating that Col. David Crockett did not die.
On April 5, 1836, the Monroe Democrat reported:
"DAVY CROCKETT NOT DEAD! We are happy to state, on the authority of a letter from Tennessee that the report of the death of the eccentric Davy Crockett is not true. 'He stated,' says the letter, 'on a hunting expedition to the Rocky Mountains, was his main objective, and then drop down into Texas. But we expect him home early, in the Spring.'"
I am not saying I believe the above news reports; it would take a great deal of evidence to convince me, Bison Bill, of so fantastic a claim. However, if they can be proven true, it would explain a great deal.
Crockett's Almanac (published from 1835 to 1857) reported that Crockett continued to have adventures around the world long after his purported death in 1836. On one occasion, for instance, he was seen diving for pearls in Japan; on another occasion, riding his pet alligator up Niagara Falls (see illustration below); he is also reported to have gone to Outer Space to wring the tail off a comet.
For years, it has been assumed that these, and many other, adventures must be fictitious because they occurred long after Crockett's purported death at the Alamo. However, if it can be proven that he survived the Alamo, all Crockett biographies will have to be revised and expanded to include these later adventures.
